Located in a typical urban Taiwanese residence, this project addresses two major structural challenges common in older buildings: massive, low-hanging beams that create a heavy sense of oppression across the living and dining areas, and a closed entryway layout that stifles natural light, leaving the foyer in perpetual shadow. The design team adopted a strategy of "dissolving boundaries" and "softening structures" to breathe new life into the space.
To break the light barrier, we replaced traditional solid walls with linear timber slats as a spatial medium. These semi-transparent slats define the transition between the entryway and the main living area while allowing natural light to penetrate deep into the foyer, effectively solving the localized issue of poor illumination in aging layouts. Addressing the thick structural beams prevalent in local architecture, we implemented fluid curved ceilings. This approach wraps the heavy horizontal beams in soft, rolling curves, concealing essential piping while using visual cues to draw the eye upward. By integrating the ceiling with the cabinetry through these curves, we successfully transformed a structural flaw into a rhythmic aesthetic focal point.
Regarding materiality, the warmth of the wood veneer contrasts sharply with the dark-toned media wall, exuding a sense of "quiet strength." This geometric logic of "circles and lines" extends into the private quarters; from the moon-like orb lighting in the bedroom to the vertical navy tiling in the bathroom, every detail reflects a cohesive design language. This project is more than a renovation; it is a profound exploration of how design thinking can reclaim light and spatial freedom within the rigid, constrained skeletons of local architecture.
